Day 15

01/09/2011 – Day 15
Ingolstadt to Vohburg - 33km

Not having really planned to camp last night we only had a few bits of cheese and ham left for breakfast. As M had work to do we decided to go into the centre of Ingolstadt and find a café or somewhere to sit. As we entered the city it started to rain so we ended up in MacDonald’s. The plan was to use the free internet you keep hearing about but in this one the internet took you to T-Mobile’s site where they expected you to pay 4.50 or something per hour! So using the mobile internet M already had we worked and made one cup of coffee last all morning.
I also used the time to photocopy all my receipts and post them with the claim form to easyjet, hoping that they might just have a moment of decency and pay what they owe me. Fat chance!
Finally leaving the city we thought we would eat lunch in the next town and as usual had the problem of finding something open. Restaurant after restaurant were closed with not even a café open for a piece of cake and coffee.
In desperation we followed the signs for a restaurant that was about 3km off the route. It took us across the river, down a dirt track and through a wriggly tin tunnel. That is where the signs stopped, leaving us on the edge of the village without any indication as to which way to turn. So having decided that the place did not exist we took a look round the last corner on the road out and there it was, just as it closed for hot food.
This was the first time we had actually had to ride in the rain we thought at least we could get a cup of coffee. As it turned out they were still doing cold food all afternoon and still serving beer. So we made do with a ‘Bavarian’ salad with shredded sausage and to local beers. Looking at the weather and the fact that yesterday had been a long day we decided to start looking for somewhere to stay, they did accommodation but it was quite expensive so we left to trace our tracks back to the route and start looking for somewhere to stay.
The next town was Vohburg and as we rode into the town along the river bank we passed the tourist office. This is usually a good place to find the cheapest rooms in town and the lady there worked hard to find us somewhere, she was determined to speak English to us even though I told her I understood some German but she was so nice we didn’t protest. She found us a room in a private house but we had to wait one hour before we could go there, no one seems to let you in before 5pm here.
This left us with finding something to do for an hour so we sat under the umbrella in an Italian café eating ice cream and drinking coffee as it drizzled for the next hour. M impressed the owner of the café by speaking Italian to her which made her smile.
Finally we left to find or room for the night and stopped at the local supermarket for a bit of shopping as it was just round the corner from the house.
The house was the last one at the end of the road and looked brand new. It was a private house and the landlord rented out two rooms to make some extra money. It was very clean and homely and he made us very welcome.
